Rice Paper Works

The rice paper I use in this series of recent work is called tengucho in Japanese. It is the thinnest paper in existence. I cherish its transparency and its ethereal quality. Also, because tengucho is made with very long fibers, it is deceptively strong. Experimenting with it, I arrived at a pleating technique that gives it body and rigidity, opening up three dimensional space by allowing the material to float. This new series of works is based on the exploitation of such gifts.
